George Wayne Vensel, 91, the next-to-last surviving member of a World War I Army veterans club, died Nov 23, 1985, at Phoenix Mountain Nursing Center.
His death leaves only Andrew Schabinger of Tucson in the Last Man's Club. The club, founded in 1939 with 39 members, set aside a quart of tequila with which the last survivor will toast his buddies.
Mr Vensel, born in Phoenix, was a football player and graduate of Phoenix Union High School and a graduate of Lamson Business College. He was a farmer in Pinal County, a clerk for the state government for 15 years and a member of Camelback Bible Church and the Maricopa County Farm Bureau. He also was a past commander and life member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Helen C; sister, Emma Hanna and brother, Carl. Services will be at 10am today at Mercer Mortuary Chapel in the Garden, 1541 E Thomas Road. Memorial contributions may be made to his church, 3900 E Stanford Drive, Paradise Valley, 85253.
