RICE, John (Jack)


John (Jack) Rice died June 25, 2010. Born April 4, 1918 in Pasadena, California. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1941, and earned his Master's Degree from Florida State University in 1959. Joined the U.S. Army in 1941, retired 1966 as Lt. Colonel. Served in the Infantry (Pacific Theater) during WWII with all subsequent service in military counterintelligence. Decorations include Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal. Moved to Tucson in 1968 as Executive Director of the Robert T. Wilson Foundation. Through the Foundation grants, he was active in and financially supported, various philanthropic, educational and environmental groups in Arizona, including scholarship programs at the U of A, NAU and ASU. Active in Korea and the Philippines where he established employment and educational programs for mixed race children. Served directly under McArthur, post war Japan. He also served on the Arizona State Board of Health, Board of Trustees of Prescott College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and various local philanthropic and environmental boards. Survived by wife, Betty and daughters, Deborah Burris and Bonnie Martinez of Tucson; sons, Randall Rice, Washington State, John Rice, S.F. CA and R.K. Rice, Ketchikan, AK.
