Norman G. "Stormy" Massey died Saturday, July 29, 2006 in Show Low at the age of 79.
Norman was born April 11, 1927 in Solomonville, to the late Clark V. and Lela Winnifred (Wickliffe) Massey. He moved to Lakeside when he was a young boy and attended the old Lakeside High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the U.S.S. Ranger during WWII. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Norman married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Alice Brooks April 21, 1946 in McNary. Their marriage was later solemnized in The Arizona Mesa Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Norman was a "Jack-of-all-trades" working many years at the Fish Saw Mill in Show Low, and the McNary Saw Mill, was a brakeman for the Apache Railway, and was a logger throughout the entire White Mountain region. He retired as Postmaster from Lakeside after 22 years of service. Norman was a man of many talents and besides being a gifted poet, he also played the guitar and harmonica very well. He was once named as Lakeside's Citizen of the Year and was the founder of the Pinetop-Lakeside Little League. Norman was a true patriarch and will be missed greatly by his family.
Norman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary A. Massey of Lakeside; daughter-in-law Robin Massey of Pinetop; four sons, David Massey of Lakeside, Michael Massey of Scottsdale, Craig Massey and his wife, Rosalind of Eagar, and Mark Massey of West Hills, Calif.; two sisters, Evelyn (Norman) West of Lakeside, and Winona Green of Mesa; 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Massey in 1993.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Pinetop-Lakeside Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with a viewing one hour prior to service.
