DOWNS, Walter Ray


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 08/11/2006 Walter Downs died Aug. 5, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born to Walter and Mabel (Waechter) Downs. He moved to Arizona in 1963. Walter served for three years in the United States Army, where he served as a radio technician. He was a charter member of the Overgaard Fire Department and an EMT for over 25 years. Walter retired from the paper mill after 35 years. He helped start the American Legion in Overgaard and was a post Commander. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Walter was instrumental in the development of the Overgaard Country Club. He was truly loved by all who knew him. Walter is survived by his brother, Marvin G. (Winona) of Snowflake; sister-in-law, Faye McKinney (Gary) of Garland, Texas; nephew James McKinney of Seven Points, Texas; caregivers and nephew, Richard and Teresa Herbert of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lavon Downs; his parents; stepfather, Thomas Hobbs; and brother James Downs. A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Heber Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment was at Heber Cemetery.
