Ethel Scar, Earlham
Mrs. Ethel Scar, 82, Earlham, who was honored last year by the family of John Wayne for her research into the actor's early life in Winterset and Earlham, died May 6 at her home in Earlham.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter of which she was a member. Burial will be at the Penn Center Cemetery.
Born in Exira, Iowa Dec. 5, 1901, she was the daughter of Charles and Maria Petri Newman. She lived in the Earlham area all her married life.
Members of the John Wayne Birthplace Committee invited Mrs. Scar to the ceremonies when Michael Wayne was in Winterset in the spring of 1983 to dedicate the home of his father. Later, the Wayne family presented her with a special plaque for her efforts in researching John Wayne's early life.
Survivors include son, Norman and Leonard, both of Earlham; a daughter, Alice Bruns of Chandler, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
