Mildred Luella Payne, 91, a former longtime Wickenburg resident, died May 12 in Holdenville, Oklahoma.
Mrs. Payne was born March 28, 1900 in Missouri. She had lived in Arizona for 30 years before moving from Wickenburg in the early 1980s.
She and her husband, Jim, who preceded her in death, lived in Wyoming and California before moving to Wickenburg in the late 1950s.
She was one of the founding members in 1964 of the Wickenburg Art Club, and served in all of its offices. She also served several years as chairman of the WAC’s Gold Rush Days art show.
Mrs. Payne was a noted artist who worked in oils, and as late as 1983 was still showing her work. She studied art at San Jose State College and at the College of Pacific in San Francisco.
While living in Wickenburg, she was also very active in the Wide Owl Senior Center.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Mrs. Payne was a devote Christian and was faithful in her service to God.
Survivors include a sister, Wilda Kernek, of Holdenville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Thursday, May 16 at 2 p.m. at the Wickenburg Funeral Home. Dave Olson will officiate with burial following in the Wickenburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American heart and Lung Association.
