Dakota Eagleman RedDay, 34, died July 7, 2010, at Flagstaff Medical Center. He was born Nov. 19, 1975, at Tuba City Indian Hospital in Tuba City.
He was of the Tl'izilani (Manygoat) clan, born for the Dakota people of Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota. His parents are Lorraine Bedonie-RedDay of Tuba City/Coalmine Mesa and Myron James RedDay of Spirit Lake, N.D. He has one brother, Hunter Eagleman RedDay of Flagstaff.
He was raised in Salt Lake City and attended elementary school and junior high school in Provo, Utah, and Salt Lake City until 1990. He attended Greyhills Academy High School in Tuba City from 1990 to 1994, where he played football and was a member of the chess club, both of which he enjoyed very much. He also interned as a radio announcer for KGHR from 1992 to 1994. Dakota graduated from Greyhills Academy High School in 1994.
After high school, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., from 1995 to 1997 and studied liberal arts with an interest in history. His hobbies included: serious chess playing, composing, singing pow wow songs and poetry writing, through which social justice is advocated. He loved attending reggae shows and performances, which also promoted social justice, and had a love for all humanity.
He was employed at New Frontiers Market in Flagstaff, where he enjoyed working with his many fellow coworkers, serving and interacting with customers.
He is survived by his parents, brother Hunter and family (Rene and Arianna); uncle Robert Bedonie Sr. of Tuba City; aunts Irene Bedonie of Farmington, N.M., Margaret Medicine Horse-Jefferson of Wyola, Mont., Joanne Old Crow of Tuba City, and Clara Bedonie and Christine Bedonie of Salt Lake City; maternal grandfather Joe Bedonie of Tuba City; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and clan members on the Navajo and Spirit Lake Nations.
A funeral service will be Monday, July 12, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Linda Vista Ward, 2401 E. Linda Vista Drive, in Flagstaff.
Viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a service at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff. A reception will follow the interment at the church.
