Mary McGilberry, 92, of Winslow, died Saturday, July 10, 2010, of pneumonia. She was being cared for at home by her son, Tommy Dukes, and nieces Ruby Jackson and Lucille Edward when she died.
Mrs. McGilberry was a very unique person; she was always a friend to the friendless and if a person was down on their luck, she was always one to help in whatever way she could. She not only helped in the community, but she also worked faithfully at Zion Baptist Church, where she was a longtime member. She served on the Senior Usher Board and was a faithful member in the Senior Choir. She took on many other activities in the church, like being the Birthday Captain to help raise money for any good cause.
She was known for her Southern cooking. Her specialty was her well-known chicken and dumplings. Not only was cooking her hobby; she also enjoyed fishing, sewing, shopping and music. When she went fishing, she would always share her catch with the neighborhood.
Because of her finery in dress, Mrs. McGilberry was asked to model her clothes and hats for the "Annual Spring Show of Modeling" given by the Northern District Baptist Association. She was one to give the best showing, and many people would come just to see her model her clothes and hats.
She loved music; you could always find her every year at "Standing on the Corner." She supported many activities when she could. Not only was she supportive, but she always had a word of encouragement for anyone who needed it.
Mrs. McGilberry is survived by her sons, Robert L. Evans of Phoenix, Andrew Dukes of Paulding, Miss., Tommy Dukes and Jimmy Dukes McGilberry, both of Winslow; daughter Clara Mae Ezell of Phoenix; and 19 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Angie Watkins; and siblings Spencer, Dave, Will, Clara, Jay Ruth, Rosie and Estella.
Visitation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Zion Baptist Church, with a graveside service to follow at Desert View Cemetery. Condolences can be sent to www.greersmortuary.com.
