Douglas Merle Maxwell, 79, passed away July 9, 2010, at his home in Lake Havasu City. He was born June 8, 1931, in Iowa, to Hubert and Getsie Maxwell.
Douglas served his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an avid, still practicing, private pilot for more than 20 years. He married his beloved wife, Valerie, Feb. 14, 1988, in Milan, Ill. They moved to Lake Havasu City 10 years ago. Douglas loved watching NASCAR, rooting for the Yankees and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Douglas enjoyed attending antique car shows as well as listening to country music, both old and new. He had a special fondness for all animals. Douglas was especially proud of his Scottish heritage and was always researching his geneaology. He was a proud Marine and lived by the creed, "Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Douglas was a past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Rock Island as well as a Shriner's member and a member of the American Legion in Rock Island. Douglas was so very proud of his son, daughter, and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
Douglas is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Valerie Diane Maxwell, of Lake Havasu City; brother, Hubert R. (Jean) Maxwell; son, Michael (Ann) Maxwell, of Australia; daughter, Rhonda Guyton; grandchildren, Stephanie Gillihan, Casey Snead and Rebecca Maxwell; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jack and Forest Maxwell.
His funeral service will be Friday, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf, Ill. A graveside service will follow at Rock Island National Cemetery with full military honors.
