KARTCHNER, Lynnwood (Lynn) Hastings


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 07/16/2010 Lynnwood Hastings Kartchner, 84, of Snowflake died July 9, 2010, at Webb's Adult Care Home in Snowflake. Lynn was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Taylor to the late Byrtle and Emma (McCleve) Kartchner. Lynn grew up in Taylor and attended high school in Snowflake before enlisting in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He served in WWII and was the Right Hand Quarter Master to the Ship Captain. He also commandeered his own tug ship from San Diego to Hawaii. After being honorably discharged from the service, he moved back to the White Mountains, where he earned the respect of several local logging and lumber companies and began to drive for them. He married the love of his life, Velva Mills, in Show Low and together they began their life together. Lynn was the lead surveyor for the Arizona Department of Transportation while constructing the road from McNary to Springerville. He also partnered with Tadd Reidhead at the B&R Lumber Company in Snowflake and worked for the Paper Mill for 20 years before his retirement. A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served in the Elders' Quorum Presidency as well as a member of the High Priest Group leadership. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an accomplished pilot. He will be missed by all whom have had the opportunity to know him. He is survived by his wife Velva of Snowflake; sons Randy (Jennifer) of Eaga, Rick (Kathy) of Provo, Utah, formerly of Snowflake, Kayle of Chandler; eight grandchildren Kamm, Cody, Chad, Kyle, Jared, Michael, Benjamin, Jacob; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters Mildred Rhoton and Fern O'Neil. He was preceded in death by his grandson Chris as well as several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Snowflake Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 175 W. 9th S. Snowflake, with the visitation beginning one hour prior. The concluding service and interment will be at the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake.
