Three persons were killed in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 89 approximately nine miles north of Wickenburg on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. said a Department of Public Safety officer.
Pronounced dead at the scene were Mary E. Hoover, 53, of Congress; Jose M. Duran, 54 and an unidentified 41 year old Mexican citizen.
The officer reported the initial investigation indicates that the accident occurred in the northbound lane in which Hoover was apparently traveling.
He said the investigation indicates Duran’s vehicle was southbound and traveling in the wrong lane when the collision occurred.
The investigating officer reported no marks or indication of evasive action, Blood alcohol test are being made on all parties.
Beer cans were found in Duran’s vehicle, but no conclusions have been reached if they have any relation to the accident.
The victims were removed to the Yavapai County Medical Examiner by Ruffner’s Funeral home in Prescott.
A Wickenburg DPS officer said after making contact with Duran’s wife that they believe he had traveled to a location unknown to watch the Super Bowl.
Duran’s passenger had yet to be identified pending notification of next of kin.
U.S. Highway 89 was closed between the junction of highways 89/93 and Congress Junction for approximately four hours because of debris from the two vehicles.
The officer said his investigation indicated that the vehicles hit within 10 inches of being aligned headlight to headlight. Approximate speeds have yet to be determined.
