Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona September 5, 1985, front page A two-car Phoenix freeway accident claimed the life of a Wickenburg woman early Tuesday morning traveling home with her husband and friends from a rock concert at Compton Terrace. Department of Public Safety officers said the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 at Cactus Road at approximately 3:35 a.m. Sue A. Ray, 36, a passenger in the pickup driven by her husband, was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple head injuries and a broken neck. Officers reported Tuesday morning that a pickup driven by Ralph R. Ray, 45, of Wickenburg, had slowed apparently to take evasive action for something in the roadway when a second pickup driven by Curtis A. Cooper, 24, of Phoenix, attempted to pass and hit the left rear corner of Ray’s truck driving into a guardrail where it over turned landing on its top. The investigating officer reported Cooper sustained no apparent injuries from the accident. Ralph R. Ray was treated and released for multiple abrasions from John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix. Passengers in the Ray vehicle were John Franklin, 32, and Robert Green 30, both of Wickenburg. Both were treated and released from John C. Lincoln Hospital, Franklin with a head laceration and Green with multiple abrasions. The investigating officers said seatbelts were not worn and it is his opinion they could have prevented the fatality. There was no report of any citations issued as of Tuesday morning. She was born March 10, 1949 in Findlay, Ohio and lived in Arizona for seven-and-a- half years. Survivors include her husband, Ralph; two sons, Steven Allen and Robert Charles; two daughter, Lisa Gail and Tiffany Sue, all of Wickenburg; three brothers, four sisters and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A private cremation was conducted by the Wickenburg Funeral Home.
