Loyd Ira Lewis, 81, of Merced, Calif., died Sept. 13 in a California hospital.
Lewis was born at Mill Creek in Oklahoma when it was still Indian Territory. He and his wife, Edna, retired from teaching in Luepp and lived in Wickenburg from 1971 to 1976. While living in Wickenburg, they were active in the Calvary Baptist Church. He also organized and was president of the Wickenburg Chapter of National Retired Teachers Association and the American Association of the Retired Persons. He was also a member of the Gideons and was active in American Red Cross volunteer work and the Merced-Mariposa Hospice.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include one daughter, Bernice Metz, of Saratoga, Calif., two brothers, A.J. and Paul Lewis, both of Sulphur, Okla.; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Services were Sept. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Merced. The family request memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist church of Merced or the Gideons.
