James Palmer Smalley, 75, died peacefully at home on July 13. Mr. Smalley was a longtime resident of Wickenburg and supporter of the community. He was an avid hunter and gunman. He served his country proudly in the Korean war and was the last man to climb Pork Chop Hill. He joined the forest service as a geologist in Santa Barbara when he returned from the war.
After retirement, Jim remained very active for his country. He trained Navy Seals on desert survival and was a member of the American Legion, China post 1. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beth last year. He leaves behind 4 daughters and a son, along with their families: Christina Capper and her 2 children; Carmen Smalley, Joyce Hawkins and her son, Benjamin Ford; and Carmen Stacy, her husband-to-be Mitch Nelson and daughter Taylor Jenkins; and son Clay Smalley. Jim also leaves behind his very, very dear friend Dave Ganci.
As Jim was an animal lover it would be a shame not to mention the 2 dear furry friends still at home, Pete and Red Bear. In leiu of flowers please make a donation to support the Wickenburg High School rifle club.
Jim was a staunch Republican and believer in the right to bear arms. He was a veteran, local business owner and devoted husband and father.
Jim and his family would like to sincerely thank David Poyner of Dave’s Desert Chapel for his loving assistance and compassion with so many of our loved ones. We will miss you, Dad.
