Mary Ellen Hamilton, 89, of Flagstaff, died peacefully July 15, 2010, following a brief illness. She was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Great Bend, Kan.
Mrs. Hamilton was a resident of Flagstaff for 60 years; in that time, she grew a special fondness for northern Arizona, its people, places and history. She had a strong sense of community and involved herself in various charitable and benevolent projects while maintaining a professional tax preparation and real estate career.
She loved her country and was a strong proponent of maintaining its principles, chairing the Coconino County Republicans for 20 years. She was a member of the Grand Canyon Historical Society and the Coconino Lapidary Club. She enjoyed meeting people and seeing new things in Arizona and in her travels to other countries around the globe. Always, her love was for her family and for this beautiful state.
Mrs. Hamilton is survived by two children, son William H. Hamilton III and daughter Mary Ellen "Pinkie" Lockett (Derald Dougherty); two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Hamilton.
A celebration of life memorial will be Saturday, Aug. 14, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Flagstaff Elk's Club.
