Helen was warm, outgoing and precocious, loved the Bible and began singing very young; a choir director took interest in her and helped develop her singing voice and performing presence. Helen was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church (Illinois) when she met Martin Housman in Sunday school. Helen and Martin were married on June 26, 1937. She always had a love for children and took an interest in their Christian development; became a Sunday school teacher and later developed a Junior Choir. Martin and Helen did not have any children of their own. Martin health weakened and they needed to leave Chicago in 1953. They arrived in Tucson, not only found their new home, but a place in God's planting his church. They became actively involved and were chartered members of Tucson Reformed Church. Martin was elected one of the first three elders and was the first vice-president to consistory. The Housman's started a business, Mar-Lens Babyland at 3535 East Speedway which Martin worked until he retired in 1977. Helen worked for Faye Creation (a design store) from 1956 to 1970. Helen remained active in the church sharing musical talents and teaching abilities. Helen joined the Women's Guild for Christian Service which later became know as Women's Ministries. Helen worked for the U of A's Student Union from 1970 to 1985 when she retired at age 70. Retiring didn't stop Helen, she volunteered in the Hospice Program through St. Joseph's Hospital; the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop; and Tucson Medical Center's Meals on Wheels program; became the main caregiver for a friend. In 1991, Helen was made Honorary Lifetime Member of the Tucson Cactus, Succulent Society. Martin and Helen were able to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary and Martin's 82nd Birthday before his death in July of that year.
