The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Friday, July 31, 2010 Helen Carr died at home in Prescott, Ariz., July 23, 2010. She was born June 27, 1920, in Eveline Township, Charlevoix County, Mich., to Vernon and Mildred Payton. The family moved to San Diego, Calif., when she was an infant. Miss Payton was a graduate of San Diego Hoover High School and the University of California, Berkley. Miss Payton worked at Hughes Aircraft. In 1943, she enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving at Cherry Point, N.C. She married fellow marine Donald Carr in December 1944. After the war, the Carrs made their home in Chesterton, Ind. Mrs. Carr served as a volunteer in the East Lake-Porter County Girl Scout Council, joined the professional staff, and retired as executive director. Mr. and Mrs. Carr retired to Prescott in 1982, residing in Yavapai Hills. They moved to San Marcos, Calif., in 1997. After her husband's death in 2003, Mrs. Carr returned to Prescott. She enjoyed needlework, knitting, scrapbooking and playing bridge. Survivors include her son, Bruce Carr of Bethel Park, Pa.; daughter Laurie Carr of Prescott Valley; daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Michael Garner of Middletown, Conn.; grandsons Bryan Carr, Calvin and Case Garner; and great-grandsons Kevin and Nathan Carr. Family and friends will celebrate this life well lived at a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, at First Congregational Church in Prescott. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Camp Scholarships Fund, Arizona Cactus-Pine Girl Scout Council. Arrangements by Heritage Memory Mortuary in Prescott, Ariz.
