John Vernon Ogle passed away Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at his residence at the age of 95. John was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Fairfield, Iowa, to John and Bonnie (Vernon) Ogle.
Growing up, John was a natural learner and athlete. Sports came easy to him, and as he grew up, he passed along his skill and knowledge to many others. John excelled in many sports, among them were track and field, bowling and baseball. His skills at baseball landed him with the Angels Organization. Later on, he also became a professional softball pitcher.
John left pro baseball to pursue a career in education. Following college, John became a teacher for the Los Angeles School District, where he worked for 34 years. He took great pride in his teaching, not only in the classroom but on the field as well. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, among them water and snow skiing.
John and his wife, Jeanette, moved to Boise, Idaho, and eventually relocated to Lake Havasu City 15 years ago.
John is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Jeanette; son, Robert C Ogle, of Tucson; brother, Robert E. Ogle, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; grandchildren, Derek Ogle, Jessica Hoskins, Debbie Holbrook, Cindy Bradford, and Cheryl Engen; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Van Dyke.
An amazing event occurred in John’s life about six months ago. John accepted the Lord into his life and was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church a month before his 95th birthday. John now knows that he is with the Lord and his family takes great comfort in knowing that.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1605 S. McCulloch Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to Hospice of Havasu, 365 S Lake Havasu Ave., Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403.
