BAILEY, Wilfrid Charles (Bill)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ November 13, 2007 Wilfrid Charles "Bill" Bailey, 89, of Snowflake died Nov. 8, 2007, in Show Low. Mr. Bailey, a retired anthropologist for the University of Georgia, was born May 3, 1918, in Cicero, Ill. He grew up and attended school in Illinois. Following high school he attended junior college in Illinois, then moved to Tucson and attended the University of Arizona where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in anthropology. While attending U of A he met Ethelene Scott, and they were married June 7, 1941. Following their marriage, they moved to Illinois where he attended the University of Chicago. He was drafted into the military in 1943. He completed his military service in 1946 and returned to the University of Chicago where he received his PhD. He taught at the University of Texas until 1955. He then taught at Mississippi State University before teaching at the University of Georgia in 1962. He retired from the University of Georgia in 1984 and moved to Tucson in 1986. His wife preceded him in death in February 1995. Following her death, he moved to Snowflake to be close to his children. He enjoyed reading, gardening and stamp collecting. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including, bishop, branch president, temple worker, as well as serving in the bishop's Store House. Bill is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Littlejohn of Houston, Texas and Ruth Wilson of Chilliwack, B.C.; two sons, Charles Edward Bailey of Tucson and James Arthur Bailey of Snowflake; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at the Temple View Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a visitation one hour before services at the church and from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Owens Mortuary in Snowflake. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. Owens Mortuary of Snowflake handled arrangements.
