Norman O. Friend, 77, passed away June 2, 2008, in Lake Havasu City. He was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Edward and Louise Friend.
He graduated from Essex Agricultural College in 1958 and was the owner operator of Global van lines and Atlas van lines until his retirement in 1987. Norman married Margaret M. Friend in Brooklyn on Oct. 18, 1948, and together with their children they made Lake Havasu City their home in 1976 from Londonderry, N.H.
Norman was an active member in the Jr. Chamber of Commerce in Londonderry, the Young Republicans of New Hampshire, the National Breeders Association and a 32-year member of the Lake Havasu City Equestrians.
He loved spending time with his family, coaching and umpiring pony and colt league baseball in Salem, N.H., and watching baseball with his grandsons. Other favorite pastimes included trail riding through the Arizona desert and traveling the open road with his wife, daughters and granddaughters. Many happy days were spent at the Lake Havasu City Equestrian’s Center in the shade of the blacksmith rack with his close friends, both human and equine.
Norman is survived by his wife, Margaret Friend, of Lake Havasu City; his son, Norman aka Skip (Susan) Friend Jr., of ‘Salem; his daughters, Jean (Scott) Streibick, Teresa Friend, and Nadine (Ed) Bartels, all of Lake Havasu City; sisters, Jean Grogan, of New City, N.Y.; grandchildren, Rodney Friend, Karen Johannesen, Michael Friend, all of New Hampshire, Ginny O’Neal, of Las Vegas, Stephanie Nichols, Sara Bartels, Blake Bartels and Tristan Bartels, all of Lake Havasu City; great grandchildren, Robin and Danielle Friend, and Bergen Johannesen, of New Hampshire, and Dylan O’Neal, of Lake Havasu City.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Edward Jr., Kenneth and Richard; his sister, Louise; and his parents, Kenneth and Louise Friend.
Norman donated his body to science as a tribute to his granddaughters’ decisions to pursue medical careers. A private memorial service will held at a later date.
