Hazel M. Bagby passed away peacefully in her home with her family at her side Aug. 14. Hazel, daughter of Robert and Nellie McIntosh, was born in Lineville, Iowa, Aug. 28, 1919. She grew up on a farm with five brothers, J.T., Wayne, Billie, Carroll and Carmen, and one sister, Allie. For a short time, Hazel worked as a country schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse.
Hazel met her husband, Robert Baker Bagby, when he came to her hometown on leave from the Army with her brother, Billie. They were married Jan. 1, 1943, in Lincoln, Neb. They moved to California in 1956 to raise their children, Kay, Mikell, Susan and Barbara. Bob passed away unexpectedly in 1962. Hazel devoted the remainder of her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When Hazel’s children were older, she went back to school and became an LPN. She spent many years taking care of children and the elderly.
In 1980, Hazel moved to Lake Havasu City. She loved to square dance and was a member of the London Bridge Squares. During the winter, Hazel volunteered at the Lake Havasu Senior Center and the St. Michael’s Methodist Church Craft Group. She enjoyed spending each summer at the family cabin in Parks, Ariz., planting and tending her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Nellie; brothers, J.T. and Wayne McIntosh; husband, Robert Bagby; son-in-law, Marty; nieces, Sharon and Misty; and nephews, Bruce and DJ. She is survived by her children, Kay (Steve) Schmidt, Susan (John) Pellerin, Mikell (Val) Bagby, Barb (Rich) Goodwin; grandchildren, Robert, Matt, Summer, Jessie, Bryan and Katie; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Cory, Madison, Mason and Madison.
Hazel will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit. She was a compassionate, selfless individual who only saw the good in others. She will be dearly missed by those who loved her but her compassionate ways will live on in those whose lives she touched. Peace be with you Mom, Grandma, MeMe.
A private memorial service will celebrate Hazel’s life at a later date. Hazel would request that good deeds be done for others in her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to New Hope Hospice, 500 N. Lake Havasu Ave. Suite B106, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403.
