Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Monday, June 9, 2008 Sophia Nathanson passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Sophia was born March 15, 1930 the seventh of 11 children born to Hendrika and Hendrikus de Vos, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The family endured the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam during WWII. Sophia met her husband, Donald, an American Army Corporal during the post war occupation of Germany, while he was stationed in Bad Kreuznach. After marrying and having their first child in Germany, they returned in 1955 to the Bronx, N.Y., Donald’s home. They had two more children during their long marriage and lived in Valley Stream, Long Island for many years before retiring to Lake Havasu City more than five years ago. Sophia was a voracious reader who also loved travel, gardening and feeding the ducks at LakeHavasu. She was a gentle and compassionate soul. Sophia and Donald traveled extensively throughout their 54-year marriage. Sophia is survived by her devoted husband, Donald; children, Alexandra Nathanson Shinn, Brian Nathanson, and Carole Nathanson; son-in-law, Ken Shinn; daughter-in-law, Penny Nathanson; granddaughters, Marni and Cali Nathanson; and many siblings, nieces, and nephews living across many continents.
