John Hodgers, Jr., age 93, of Prescott, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Prescott Samaritan Village. John was born Oct. 31, 1910, in Minas Prietas, Sonora, Mexico.
He was educated in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and San Fernando, Calif. before entering the U.S. Army in July 1942 and becoming a citizen in the fall of that year. He served in the 89th Infantry, Company "K", at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. He suffered major injuries in Germany on March 26, 1945, and spent the next three years in hospitals undergoing 12 major operations to repair hip and leg injuries. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Prescott in May 1948, where he had an accounting business for more than 25 years. He was the treasurer of the Yavapai County Youth Center during its first nine years, member of Board of Freeholders, who wrote the charter for the City of Prescott, in 1958, member of First Congregational Church for 55 years, member of Kiwanis for 26 years and a member of the Governor's Safety Council and Disabled American Veterans.
John is survived by his daughters, Terry Starr of Glendale, Ariz., and Dina Rossman of Mesa, Ariz.; son-in-law, Rick Starr; and grandchildren, John and Sherry Rossman, R.T. Starr, Brenda Rossman, Brian Starr and Neil Rossman. His wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death in March 2003.
Burial will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the First Congregational Church of Prescott. The Rev. William Guise will officiate at both services. The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Yavapai Exceptional Industries, 436 N. Washington Ave., Prescott, AZ 86301. The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the final arrangements.
