HOLLORAN, Duane Peter (Ph.D.)(Rev)

Rev. Duane Peter Holloran, Ph.D. Duane Holloran, 70, passed peacefully from this life on May 3, 2008. He was surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of his home. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 17, 1938 to Howard and Katherine Holloran, he spent his younger years in Chardon, Ohio before moving to Tucson, AZ at the age of 12. After Tucson High School he attended the University of Arizona, graduating with honors in 1960. He was active in the Sigma Chi fraternity while at the U of A. He married Nancy Kate Owens in 1959 before moving to New Jersey to attend Princeton Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1963 with a Master's of Divinity degree. Returning to Arizona he served as pastor of Scottsdale Presbyterian Church and Orangewood Presbyterian Church in Phoenix. Duane then enrolled at Arizona State University and obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1973. With the support of local pastors and congregations the Phoenix Interfaith Counseling program was founded in 1973. For the following 24 years Duane served as Executive Director. His mission was to provide high quality professional counseling for individuals and families on an ability to pay basis. While at Interfaith Duane also supervised interns and residents in master's and doctoral programs. His work with the Presbytery of Grand Canyon helped to counsel pastors and their families and also congregations in conflict. Duane served as adjunct professor for San Francisco Seminary, Arizona State University and Phoenix Community College. In 1997 Duane returned to the parish ministry, accepting a call to serve as associate pastor at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, Scottsdale. This was a time of joy for him as community was built and relationships formed. He believed that the response to God's love was to serve and help others. Duane is survived by Nancy, his wife of 48 years and sons Patrick (Keri) of Phoenix and Andrew (Laura) of Hayden, ID; the greatest joys of his life his grandchildren, Matthew, Will, Tommy, Abby and Nate; sister, Anita Dantino, Ft. Myers, FL; brother, Michael, AZ; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; brother in law, Dr. Sherwood Owens (Jody) Tucson, AZ. All were precious in his life. Duane was a member of the Presbytery of Grand Canyon, American Psychological Association, America Association of Pastoral Counselors and other professional and community organizations. Duane was committed to his work, but his zest for life was showered on family, most notably on his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Grandpa Dew", friends, activities and sports. His sense of humor and love of people was embraced by everyone he touched. The family is grateful for the loving and constant care given by Mayo Clinic physicians and nurses and Hospice of the Valley. A Memorial Service celebrating the spirit of Duane's life will be on Friday, May 9, 2008, 10:00 A.M., at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Holloran Memorial Counseling Fund which will provide counseling resources to friends and members of the church community. Donations may be mailed to Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, 25150 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.
