Martin (Marty) John Solberg, III went to meet our Lord at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, in Springerville. His life included many accomplishments.
He was born Sept. 15, 1936 in Ill., where he met and married Fran, his wife of 53 years. They had three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild to be born in December.
Fran and Marty moved to Alpine in 1985 from Phoenix where he was a bricklayer and stone mason. He immediately got involved in the community. He was on the County Board-Planning and Zoning for 14 years and helped build and establish the Alpine Fire Department. The three white crosses that stand in front of his church, St. Helena Catholic Church in Alpine are one of the many volunteer projects he was involved with. Marty will be missed by his family, his community and his church.
Marty is survived by his wife Frances R. Solberg of Alpine; son Martin J. (Laurie K.) Solberg, IV of Safford; daughters Laura A. (Alan) Mounce and Carolyn M. (Tom) Ticer both of Safford; brothers Ronald A. Solberg, David A. Solberg; and seven grandchildren David A. Gherna, Daniel M. Gherna, Derrick R. Gherna, Chad M. Solberg, Melissa K. Solberg, Kaitlyn R. Ticer and Mathew T. Ticer.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents Martin John Solberg, Jr. and Theresa Rose Walters Solberg.
A rosary will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at St. Helena Catholic Church in Alpine. A funeral mass will follow at noon also at the church. Interment will follow the funeral mass at the Alpine Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to The American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
