GARRARD, Mary Theresa

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ August 6, 2007 Mary Theresa Garrard, 91, of Pinetop died July 31, 2007, in Vernon. Mary, a retired manager for Sweitzer Canyon, was born May 1, 1916, in Flagstaff. Mary graduated from the Sisters of Loretto Academy in Santa Fe, N.M. She married the late Donald P. Garrard July 1, 1939. She was a member of the Business Professional Women and the Beta Sigma Phi Flagstaff Chapters. She worked for Fine's, Fae's and Babbit Brothers Department Stores, then managed Swietzer Canyon for 34 years. She was also the founder of the Flagstaff Election Board. She was an avid golfer and loved to paint. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald P. Garrard; sister Carmen Lay as well as her brothers, Andrew and Peter Martin, and son-in-law Bruce DeVault. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (and her husband, Abe) Martinez of Pinetop and Linda DeVault of Phoenix; grandchildren, Abe Martinez, III (and his wife, Tiffany) of Kingman, Melissa Grzelak (and her husband, J.J.) of Pinetop, Aaron Devault of Golden, Colo., Donald DeVault (and his wife, Jennifer) of Maricopa; and four great grandchildren. A funeral mass was celebrated Monday, Aug. 6, at Guadalupe Catholic Church, 224 S. Kendrick in Flagstaff. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, also in Flagstaff.
