Ray Gamble died June 17, 2007.
He was born Jan. 29, 2007, to Raymond and Ethel Gamble Sr., the oldest of three children. The family moved from Florida to Cleveland, Ohio, and then to Greenville, Pa., where Ray graduated from Greenville High School in 1940.
While in high school he met Norma Scott, and they married in 1942. That same year, he joined the Army and was stationed in Georgia where he served until 1945. While in the service, their first child, Kathleen, was born in 1944.
After his discharge from the Army, they moved back to Pennsylvania where their second child, Dennis, was born in 1947. The family moved to Tucson in 1950 and Ray went to work for Shamrock Dairy.
After working at the dairy, he sold life insurance before going to work at Hughes Aircraft Company. In 1953, their third child, David, was born. After Hughes, he worked many years for the Tucson Unified School District as the head engineer at Catalina High School.
While living in Tucson, Ray and Norma were very active in square dancing and also helped with the teen square dancing groups. They were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church. After retiring from TUSD, Ray and Norma moved to Show Low in 1984. While living in Show Low, he volunteered at Navapache hospital (now Summit Regional Medical Healthcare) where he was the first male president of the hospital auxiliary. He was an active member of the White Mountain United Methodist Church, a member of the Elks and American Legion.
Ray enjoyed golf, playing pool, going out to eat with friends and was an avid fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns. This past April, Ray moved back to Tucson to be closer to his family and was looking forward to spending more time with them. His wife, Norma, died in 1997.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at White Mountain United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Cutlipp officiating.

Raymond B. Gamble Jr., 85, died peacefully surrounded by his family June 17, 2007, in Tucson.
Ray was born in Sebring, Fla., Jan. 29, 1922, to Raymond and Ethel Gamble Sr. He joined the Army in 1942, was stationed in Georgia, and served until 1945. The family moved to Tucson in 1950 from Greenville, Pa. After retiring from TUSD, Ray and Norma moved to Show Low in 1984. He is survived by his sister Betty; daughter Kathleen Fordney (Don); son Dennis (Minnie) and David (Liz); seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma.
A memorial service will be held in Show Low at a later date. In Ray's memory donations can be sent to TMC Foundation, 5301 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ 85712, Attn: Hospice Care. The family would like to acknowledge the staff and doctors at TMC/TMC Hospice Care for the wonderful, loving care they gave while Raymond was in their care.
