John Hubert Sumner was born Jan. 1, 1931 in Lumberport, W.V., to William and Agnes Sumner. He was joined by siblings Betty L. (Underdown), William, and Hattie (Cox).
John enlisted in the Army Air Corp at age 16 with the aid of his father, and later re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. John served his country in the Lucian Islands, England, North Korea, Hawaii, Vietnam, and Panama. John retired from the Air Force in 1969 as a master sergeant and moved to California.
John married Marry Gonzales and to that union were born Sharon, John II, Theresa and Jay.
In 1972 John began a new life with a new wife Phyllis and new location when he moved to Wickenburg. He adopted Phyllis’ two sons Claude and Jack, raising them as his own and to their union was born Heather.
John loved working with his hands from wood working to mechanics and everything in between. Although retired from the Air Force, John worked many places in Wickenburg. Among them, he managed a gas station, did some construction, then Napa Auto Parts, Big A Auto Parts, was service manager for Bromm Chevrolet, service manager at Craig’s Automotive, service manager for Lowes Auto Repair, and maintenance man at the Hassayampa Village Apartments.
John passed from this life Sept. 18 after a battle with lung cancer.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Hattie. Survivors include his wife of 38 years Phyllis, sister Betty and brother William; children Sharon, John (Eva), Theresa, Jay (Cathy), Claude, Jack (Mellissa) and Heather; grandchildren Amy, John III, Tony, Christopher, Brandon, Andy, TJ, Candice, Megan, Charli, Johnnie Leigh, Jordon, Preston, Madison, Jessica, KayAnna and Keylee.
Services are to be held Saturday (Sept. 25) at Mount Hope Assembly of God, 550 Penn Lane in Wickenburg. Viewing is at 10 a.m. and service to follow at 11. Arrangements are under the direction of David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
