Barbara Gorman, age 91, quietly slipped away on Sept. 17, 2010, at home in Prescott, Ariz. She was born on June 6, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn., where she spent most of her childhood.
She graduated from the University of Minnesota as a Home Economist in Institutional Management. Her most talked about memories were times as a youth on Lake Minnetonka, Minn., and working in Glacier Park, Mont.
During WWII, she taught parachute rigging and radio electronics at Chanute Field, Ill., where she met a Montana farmer, Norman Wood. They were married from 1945 to 1972 and raised four children in Great Falls. During her Montana years, Barbara was active with school PTA, Girl Scouts, Episcopal Church Women, American Association of University Women and the Mayflower Society. She enjoyed socializing, sewing, knitting, needlework and baking.
In 1974, she met Joseph E. Gorman Jr., while they were both working for a food broker in Montana. They were married in June 1975 and made their home in California. In 1997, they moved to Prescott, Ariz., where they have been active members of St. Luke's Parish.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Joe; her four children, Sharon Scow of Phoenix, Ariz., Maria Oleson of Huntington Beach, Calif., Barb Cable (Don) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Norm Wood of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, John Dean (Maria) and Sam Dean (Jeanne); eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, a grandson and a great grandson. She also is survived by Joe's children, Lonnie Foster (Robert), Mindy and Andrew Gorman (Denise) of Portland, Ore., area and Mike (Toddy) of Burlington, Iowa.
A special appreciation is sent to Hospice of the Pines staff for their wonderful care during Barbara's last year.
The Celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at St. Luke's, 2000 Shepherd's Lane, Prescott. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Luke's Outreach Program.
