The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 22, 2007 Francis Virginia Wehterill Mahan Francis "Skeeter" Mahan, 88, died March 16, 2007, in Show Low. She will be missed for her warm smile, gentle ways, sense of humor and zest for life. Mahan was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Kayenta, the adopted daughter of John and Louisa Wetherill, pioneer Indian traders on the Navajo Reservation. She was taught by private tutors through the eighth grade, then attended Mesa High School, graduating in 1938. She married Lutie "Lucky" Mahan on Oct. 18, 1945, in Gallup, N.M. Starting in Flagstaff, they moved around the world, living in Indonesia before retiring to Show Low. Mahan was preceded in death by her husband in 1991. She is survived by her four children, Gretchen "Dee" (William) Brady, Patrick Mahan Sr., Renee "Susie" (Darrel) Hansen, all of Show Low, and John "Mike" Mahan of Lizard Lick, N.C.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Rodgers of Page; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service was held March 21 at the LDS Stake Center.
