Fernard Carvel Whiting, 83, died peacefully at his home in St. Johns Thursday, March 29, 2007.
He was born May 16, 1922, in St. Johns and was the last surviving child of Charles Whiting Jr., and Jane Cadwalleder Johnson Whiting. Fernard was raised in Vernon where he attended grade school. He attended and graduated from St. Johns High School. He met his lifelong sweetheart, Evelyn Greer, while attending high school. They were married Sept. 20, 1941.
Fernard served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 in Japan and Okinawa, operating landing barges and hauling troops. Fernard and Evelyn served a temple mission at the Snowflake Temple. He was active for many years in his High Priest group and with the Boy Scouts.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Greer Whiting of St. Johns; son-in-laws Ron Bates of St. George, Utah; Ken Malanca of Camp Verde; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Carvel Whiting, Bobbie Jean Malanca and Korliss Bates; two granddaughters Jennifer and Katie Bates; seven brothers; and three sisters.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, April 3, from 6-8 p.m. at Burnham Mortuary 20 South Washington in St. Johns. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 4, at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, St. Johns.
