MILLET, Gayle (Red) Artimus


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ April 9, 2007 Gayle "Red" Artimus Millet, 87, of Lakeside, retired construction contractor and stone mason, peacefully left this earthly world March 17, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix. He was born Sept. 13, 1919, in Chino Valley, the fifth of six children born to Minerva Sanders and Artimus B. Millet. He was very proud of being a fifth generation Arizonan with family roots in Sanders, Gisela, Chino Valley and Lehi. He was an original member of the Cowboy Turtle Association (PRCA) and loved all things southwestern. He was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the European Campaign in advance of Patton. Gayle met and married his true love, Suzanne Lucienne Pierre in Lyon, France in 1945. They were married 59 years before she passed away October 2004. "Red" worked for Southwest Forest Industries in McNary prior to heading up the White Mountain Apache Construction Enterprise in Whiteriver, where he initiated a self-help housing program which enabled many Apache families to help build and own their own homes. Many of his beautiful buildings and stone construction projects can be seen throughout Navajo County, where he lived and worked for over 57 years. His wonderful stories of rodeo, military service, and life in general, will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by daughter Claude S. Endfield of Holbrook; son Jean-Pierre (Judy) Millet of Peoria; grandchildren Michael (Rebecca) Endfield, Rachel Endfield, Tylinh (Chris) Valentino, Laurel Endfield, Julianne Endfield and Suzette Millet; two sisters, Grace Carruthers of Phoenix and Elizabeth Sanders of Mesa; one brother Lamar of Sequim, Wash.; 12 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Brianna, Zachary, Caleb, Brandon, Malik, Miakoda, Nicholas, Kanen and Malia Lucienne. His extended family included LaJoo, Minh-Tam, Brandon and Jason Motwani, Raymond Endfield, Jeffery, Ted, Tom and Liam McDaniels. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne; his parents and three siblings, Gene, Anthon and Laree. Memorial services will be held in July in Lakeside.
