STEWART, Cecil Moore


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, October 14, 2010 Cecil Moore Stewart passed away on Oct. 7, 2010, in his apartment at Las Fuentes Assisted Living at the age of 91. Cecil was born May 19, 1919, and grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1941, and was soon serving his country in the Army Air Corps. During 35 months in the Pacific Theatre, Cecil served as an Intelligence Officer in the headquarters of an attack bomber group, resigning his commission as a Captain in the Air Force reserve. After WWII he did graduate studies at Tulane University in New Orleans and at Columbia University in New York. His work was largely in Human Resources Management, including work with Sylvania Electric in New York and as VP of Fairmont Foods in Omaha, Neb. During 35 years of retirement, Cecil taught management courses for four years at Yavapai College and served on the board of Prescott Samaritan Village. He was a member of the Congregational Church. An enthusiastic hiker, Cecil was an honorary lifetime member of the Prescott Outings Club, of which he served as president for four years. He was a member of the Arizona Archeological Society, Westerners, Dinner Club, Scots of Prescott, Prescott Camera Club, Prescott Computer Society, and Sister City Organization, being one of the first to visit Cambridge, New Zealand, when it became Prescott's Sister City. A long-time Rotarian, Cecil led a Rotary Group Study Exchange team to a Rotary District in India. He traveled considerably throughout the world, including less-visited places such as Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Easter Island, Iceland, Antarctica, Uzbekistan, Siberia, Mongolia and many islands of Indonesia. He hiked on every continent and rafted or canoed on the Colorado River and two of its tributaries and on rivers in Nepal and Peru. Cecil was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Jeanne Toors Stewart. He is survived by daughters Cindi (Bob) Swope and Cecily (Joe) Gray, both of Prescott; and son Charles (Barbara) Stewart of Las Vegas; grandchildren Emily (Adrian) Martinez of Winslow, Genevieve (Ricky) Martinez, Daniel Swope and Ira Gray, all of Prescott, Brian Lawler of Tempe, Stewart Lawler of Tucson, Chad (Amber) Gray of New York; and four great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Las Fuentes in the Social Room. Memorial contributions may be made to The Amazon Medical Project, P.O.
