GRIEGER,
Louis A., Jr.
Louis A. Grieger, Jr., was born in Minneapolis, Kansas on July 26, 1916, and at the age of 11 months moved to a farm in Wanatah, Indiana where he graduated from high school. He went on to Indiana University where he majored in History and was one of the pitchers on the 1938 Big 10 Championship team and graduated in 1938.
He then worked at the Gary Steel Mills as a metallurgist until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the Naval Air Corps where he was a pilot in the Pacific Theater ending his military career shortly after the close of hostilities in Japan.
He married Jean Ridgley on December 11, 1944 in Gary, Indiana. Mr. Grieger then worked for the Veteran's Administration in Tucson, Arizona for two years. Mr. and Mrs. Grieger moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1947 and he began his lifetime career with The Equitable Life Assurance Society later becoming a Charter Life Underwriter. Mr. Grieger was a past president of Camp Fire Girls, a Luther Gulick Award Winner in 1957, Torchbearer awardee, and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Mr. Grieger was also very active in Camelback Kiwanis helping to raise funds for the community and was the Secretary for 33 years, credited for over 50 new members, a Hixon Fellow, and A Life Member.
He is survived by his three daughters, Gretchen Ann King, her husband James Luis, Katherine Jean Grieger, and Kristin Lou Fairey; grandsons, James Alan King, his wife Jan Huges King, Douglas Andrew King, his wife Christine Suzane, Alec Jason Fairey, his wife Chelsea Brooke, and his great grandson, Cameron Ross.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1407 North 2nd Street, Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Grieger requested all contributions go to Camelback Kiwanis Memorial Fund, 4008 North 15th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85015 or Great Arizona Council of Camp Fire Boys & Girls in lieu of flowers. www.almooregrimshaw.com
