The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Dennis William Shermeta, M.D (1939 - 2010) Dennis William Shermeta, M.D., age 71, of Cheboygan and Cottonwood, AZ passed away Sunday, October 24, 2010 at his home in Cheboygan. He was born October 17, 1939 in Hinsdale, IL to Peter and Stella (Harris) Shermeta. On September 19, 1995 in Sedona, AZ, Dennis married Kathleen Stephens who survives. Dennis graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1957, the University of Michigan in 1961 and the University of Michigan Medical School in 1965. He was a retired Pediatric Surgeon who trained at Johns Hopkins University and spent the majority of his career at the University of Chicago where he served as both a practicing surgeon and professor. He was an avid golfer and a Life Master Duplicate Bridge player. Besides his wife Kathleen, Dennis is survived by his two sons, Nicholas (Natalie) Shermeta of Minneapolis, MN and Benjamin (Melissa) Shermeta of Philadelphia, PA, four grandchildren, Emi, Lindsay, Lila and Wester, one brother, Doug (Beth) Shermeta of Rochester Hills, MI, four step children, Shelley (Randy) Pryka of Perrysburg, OH, Melissa (Darrell) Fortner of Erie, MI, Molly (Paul) Mullins of Aurora, IL and Clayton (Ann) Stephens of Dublin, OH and several step grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A graveside memorial service will take place at a later date.
