Dale L. Horsley died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Flagstaff Medical Center. He was surrounded by his beloved family. Dale was born to Ray Ernest Horsley and Lucinda Weeks Horsley June 27, 1931, in Rapid City, S.D.
Dale grew up in Rapid City, S.D., and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1949. At the age of 19 he boarded an Army transport ship with his 20-year-old and 23-year-old brothers and headed for Germany. After serving in the Army, Dale served for many years in the National Guard.
He married Velma Mae Linn July 24, 1955, in Wessington Springs, S.D., at Harmony Friends Church, the same church were his parents were married. Dale worked for the U.S. Civil Service, and he and Velma traveled extensively, living in 19 different states before settling in Holbrook in the spring of 1968. They raised seven children in Holbrook where Dale was proud to remain a resident until the time of his death.
Dale was a member of the Holbrook United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Holbrook Elks Lodge No. 2450, a member of the American Legion, Odd Fellows Lodge, VFW and a staunch supporter of the Hidden Cove Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Horsley of Holbrook; sons Kenneth M. Horsley (wife Madeline Victor), Michael S. Horsley and Richard D. Horsley (wife Shanda Lewis); daughters Violet Diane Greene, Debbie M. Horsley and Laura L. Phelps; and 40 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers, Warren of DeRidder, La., and Hudson of Rapid City, S.D.; three sisters, Alice Koppleman of Rapid City, S.D., Leona Potts of Rapid City, S.D., and Stella Kraft of Wessington Springs, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Danny Linn Horsley and daughter Della L. Hermann.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dale Leroy Horsley to the Elks National Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave., Chicago, IL 60614.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2 at 2 p.m. at the Holbrook Elks Lodge in Holbrook. The viewing will be Saturday evening, Dec. 13, from 6-8 p.m. There will be no graveside service.
