James "Jim" R. Pickering, 89, of Prescott, Ariz., born April 4, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., passed away Nov. 10, 2010.
A Mass celebration will be at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury St. in Prescott with military honors.
Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.

James "Jim" Robert Pickering, 89, passed away Nov. 10, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society, Marley House Hospice, in Prescott, Ariz. Jim was born April 21, 1921, in St Louis, Mo., to James Robert Pickering and Rose Mackin Pickering. He served as Quartermaster in the Navy in WWII and was on a P.T. boat in the Korean War.
After service to his country, he lived in St. Louis, Mo., where he began raising his family. He was involved with his church and Boy Scouts as Assistant Scoutmaster. After moving to Naperville, Ill., he was also involved in his church, serving on the council.
In 1975, Jim moved his family to Scottsdale, Ariz. He later retired with his wife to Prescott, Ariz., where he was involved in many activities. He was a volunteer driver for 14 years for Meals on Wheels, and Adopt a Highway, organizing the Litter Lifters. Jim was a lifetime member of the Yavapai County Executive Board. He served 20 years of active work in various capacities, as well as Chairman of Yavapai County Fair for four years.
His hobbies were many, and included collecting coins, stamps, and shells. He also collected fossils and was a member of the ESCONI Club, an Earth and Science Club of Northern Illinois. He also learned to square dance and play the guitar.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lorraine; daughters Mary Harrington, Nancy Steele and Patty Sawottke; and a son, Steven Pickering.
He also had four grandchildren, Brenda Buck, Janelle Watts, Michael and Jamie Steele; and a great-grandson, Aiden Watts.
Jim was a loving father and husband. He was a man with a sense of humor who was loved by all and will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
A Mass and celebration will be Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Fleury in Prescott, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Marley House Hospice, 1063 Ruth St., Prescott, AZ 86301.
