VASQUEZ, Josephine (Grandma Largo)

Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, AZ Wednesday, November 10, 2010 Josephine Padilla Vasquez (also known to many as “Grandma Largo”), age 96, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Copper Mountain Inn in Globe, Ariz. She was born on June 19, 1914, in Hurley, N.M. She was the youngest of eleven children born to Encarnacion Padilla and Emilia Herrera Padilla. In 1927, at the age of 14 she and her parents moved from Hurley to Miami, Ariz. She attended George Washington School but could no longer continue her education due to financial hardship in her family and started working as a cook at the Miami Inspiration Hospital at the age of 15. She was very talented and learned to play the piano at a young age. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir and played the piano at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Claypool, Ariz. Prior to getting married she also worked as a seamstress for Mode O’ Day clothing store in Ventura, Calif. When she returned to Miami she met and married her husband Edward in 1950, and moved to Globe. She was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will always be remembered for the unconditional love she had for her family. She expressed her love in many ways, but especially through her wonderful home cooking, and baking apple pies for the annual Gila County Fair 4-H pie auction. She was also very talented at crocheting afghans, tablecloths, doilies and gave them as gifts to family and friends that will be treasured for years to come. She will be dearly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Edward G. “Largo” Vasquez. She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Manuel) Quintana, Helen (Duane) Breed and Josie (Roger) Moat; her six grandchildren Lindy, Nicole, Eddie, Manny, Jeff and Tiffany; and five great-grandchildren, Emily, Preston, Ella, Jaxon and Kailey. Rosary will be held on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at 7 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 201 S. Broad St., Globe, Ariz. Mass will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at 10 a.m. also at Holy Angels. Interment will be at Globe Cemetery on Hackney Avenue, in Globe. Funeral arrangements for Josephine P. Vasquez were entrusted to Miles Funeral Services Globe.
