Richard L. Maine died Oct. 15, 2008, in Winslow. He was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Herbert and Melvina Maine and was raised in a family of 20 siblings.
The family moved to West Wapato, Wash., when Richard was a child. As a youth he worked as a farm hand in the hop fields. He spent many summers in Seaside, Ore., where he developed his love of horses.
Soon after his 18th birthday in 1951, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 7th Calvary, First Division, during the Korean War. He sustained wounds in combat and received the Purple Heart, along with the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the U.N. Service Medal.
After completing his military service in 1954, Richard moved to Superior where he lived for the next 45 years.He was employed by Magma Copper Co. in 1956, and upon retiring 38 years later, Richard moved to Show Low where he lived for several years.
Richard was an active member of the Elks Lodge and was a founding member of the Superior Saddle Club.
He is survived by Paul (Kim) Maine of Sierra Vista, Roy (Wendy) Maine of Elgin, and John (Ruby) Maine of Winslow as well as seven grandchildren, six sisters and four brothers.
He was preceded in death by son, Richard Maine; parents Herbert and Melvina, eight brothers, and one sister.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. at the VFW Hall in Superior.
