The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ November 7, 2008 Albert M. Nickerson, 83, of Show Low and Mesa died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at RTA Hospice in Lakeside. Al was born to Merritt and Freda (Gneiser) Nickerson on their farm near New Raymer, Colo., on March 20, 1925. Al proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, where he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. After the war, he returned to the Colorado farm where he was raised and worked successfully as a wheat farmer until retirement. Among other things, Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and water skiing. In his later years, golf became a passion that consumed much of his time. He spent his retirement years in Arizona, where he had homes in Mesa and Show Low. Al is survived by his wife, Joanie; son Keith Nickerson; two daughters, Linda Nickerson and Patty Nutt; sister Marjorie Crosby; grandchildren Eric Nickerson, Mike Nickerson and Tracey Howard; great-grandchildren Nicholas, Megan, Alison, Emily, Mia, Ella and Spencer. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Valley Baptist Church, 555 S. Mountain Road, in Mesa, where he and Joanie were members. Memorials may be made to the RTA Hospice Foundation, 1789 W. Commerce Drive, Lakeside, AZ 85929. Arrangements were under the direction of Black's Mortuary of Show Low.
