Kathryn (Kay) Shoemaker, former Senior Center director, passed away Feb. 19, 2008, in Hollywood, Calif. Kay was born Aug. 26, 1915 to immigrant parents, Jake and Katie (Wassa) Backer, from the then Austria-Hungry. When she was four the family moved to a farm near Ann Arbor, Mich.
Kay lived and worked in the Ann Arbor area most of her adult life, graduating from University High School in 1933. She was the owner-operator of Kay's Children's Shop in Ann Arbor for many years and as such a sponsor for various bowling teams.
In 1977 she retired from An Arbor Bank, and she and her husband, John moved to Lake Havasu City. Kay was an active cancer volunteer, having survived it herself in 1973.
Her devoted husband passed away in 1994. Kay is survived by a sister, Lena (Lee) Jones, of Hollywood; and a cousin, Linda Wolf (Brian) Ramsay, currently of Colonial Heights, Va.
At her request no memorial services are planned. Cremation has taken place and her ashes scattered at Lake Havasu's Crossman Peak.
