Larry Francis Smith, 71, of Flagstaff, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2010.
Mr. Smith was born Sept. 10, 1939, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Lorenzo and Bertha (Bia) Smith. He was the First Native American U.S. Marshal, and before joining the U.S. Marshals Service, he was a detective with the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety and the Holbrook Police Department. He is recorded in the Congressional Record. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, watching his grandchildren play sports and was a powwow Gourd Dancer. He was a member of the Elks and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Mr. Smith is survived by his spouse, Mary Ann; daughters Lorri of Flagstaff, Tweet (Terence) of Prescott Valley, and Rose (Vance) of Billings, Mont.; son Sonny (Kristin) of Flagstaff; seven grandchildren; mother Bertha Smith; sister Geraldine; and brother Delfred.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lorenzo Smith; brother Lawrence Smith; and grandmother Katherine Bia.
Evening Vigil and Holy Rosary will be Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Center, 2257 E. Cedar Ave., in Flagstaff. Burial will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, followed by the Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Center. A pot luck luncheon will follow the service; a dish to be shared will be greatly appreciated.
