Robert L. "Bob" Heck
Bob was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1947 to Horace and Thelma (Britt) Heck. He celebrated his 63rd birthday shortly before his death on Dec. 3, 2010, with his family by his side after fighting a valiant battle against metastatic melanoma, living his life the way he wanted, despite his illness.
Bob joined the Marine Corps shortly after high school graduation in 1965, and served in the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company FMF PAC in Vietnam. He then served as an MP until his honorable discharge in September 1968. He earned a National Defense Medal, a Vietnamese Service Medal and a Vietnam Campaign Medal during his service.
Upon his release from military service, Bob earned a certificate in forest technology from the State University of New York and worked for the U.S. National Park Service for several years as a surveyor throughout the U.S. After settling in Prescott, Ariz., Bob worked for the City of Prescott for 23 years, retiring as a civil engineer in the Public Works Department in March of 2003.
Bob was an avid softball player and outdoorsman and, over years, developed his retirement hobbies of prospecting and hiking. He was a well-respected member of any community in which he lived and, during retirement, served on the Prescott Valley Board of Adjustments including during the diagnosis and treatment of his illness.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia ("Trish"); brother Bill Papineau (Anne) with nephew Kyle; sister Carol Houselog (Rick); niece and goddaughter Cassie; and nephew Ryne.
A celebration of Bob to remember his love of life, integrity and wit will be noon on Jan. 22, 2011, at the Fain Chapel in Fain Park, Prescott Valley.
