SMITH, Jack Albert (Dr.)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ September 18, 2008 Dr. Jack Albert Smith of Snowflake died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in Phoenix after a battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 26, 1948, in Rock Springs, Wyo., where he was a longtime resident. He was the son of Jack McKean and Kathryne Mau Smith. He attended school in Rock Springs and was a 1966 graduate of Rock Springs High School. He also attended the University of Wyoming, where he received his bachelor's degree in economics and adult education, a master's degree in adult education and doctorate degrees in law and adult education. In addition to working as a lawyer in Rock Springs, Jack was a longtime City of Rock Springs employee and the former director of Housing and Urban Development. During his time in Snowflake, Jack was employed by the Snowflake School District and Town of Snowflake as assistant manager and Human Resource Director. Jack enjoyed golf, working out, walking with his dog, Rufus, and spending time with his wife, Debbie. One of his favorite places was Black Canyon Lake where he and Debbie spent many good times. He is survived by his mother, Kathryne of Green River, Wyo.; wife Debbie and son Jack Howard Smith, both of Rock Springs, Wyo.; three daughters, Jennifer L. Smith of Los Angeles, Calif., Casey Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jamie Gossett and husband of Spartanburg, S.C.; brother Jim (Sue) Smith of Rock Springs, Wyo.; sister Nancy (Brad) Slaughter of Phoenix; and five grandchildren, Julian Smith of Camano Island, Wash., J.J. White and Snow White, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Madeline Gossett and James and Riley Gossett of Spartanburg, S.C. He was preceded in death by his father, son James and loyal friend Rufus. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Aug. 11. A memorial service will be held in Snowflake at the Living Faith Christian Church Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. Come join in sharing fond memories of a close friend.
