Karl Joseph Stockl
(October 5, 1939 - December 1, 2010)
Wonderful Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Uncle, Great-Uncle and Friend Karl Stockl, 71, passed away peacefully at his Holbrook home with his beloved family by his side.
Karl was born to Karl Stockl and Ruth Lillie Brigham in San Francisco, California prior to moving to Southern California. The family grew to include three brothers and two sisters and they enjoyed holiday celebrations, family vacations to San Clemente, Lake Elsinore, Berry Creek, and Yosemite, as well as overnight albacore fishing trips. Karl graduated from Notre Dame High School and attended Pierce College.
He served in the United States Coast Guard as a sonar operator for four years on the USCGC Taney and was stationed in Greenland, Maine and the Pacific before being honorably discharged. He began his career in the restaurant and hotel industry first as a cook for his father at Sportsman’s Lodge Restaurant and later as a food and beverage controller at The Beverly Hilton Hotel chief financial officer. He later worked for Leventhos & Horwath, CPA’s ; Vita Pic Development , Cardiovascular Associates Inc., and Nelson - Kubicek Architects.
During his work in California he received a commendation from Governor Ronald Reagan for his rectifying of food service complaints and recommended solutions in 110 funded school districts, detention centers and hospitals. After moving to Holbrook Karl was Business Manager for the Joseph City Unified School District; Business Manager for Verde Valley Ranches and was Life Insurance Agent for ING Reliastar.
Karl met Patricia “Patty” Repko in Calumet, Pennsylvania and they wed in 1967. They lived in Florida, Texas, and California before settling in Arizona. Patty pre-deceased Karl in 1989. Karl’s life began anew when he married Frances Greer and was welcomed into the warm and loving embrace of the Spurlock- Greer family. He adored the Greer children and enjoyed family gatherings most. He celebrated marriages and the addition of each grandchild and great-grandchild with enormous joy. Karl took great pride in being a doting father, father-in-law and grandfather. After living in Scottsdale two years, Karl and Frances decided to move to their home in Holbrook, Arizona. Georganna “Namina” Spurlock moved from her home in Mesa to live with them. This was a wonderful move and Karl soon became involved in community activities . Karl joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as Stake Auditor for many years. Karl was a tall man in both stature and character and was a hero for many. He enjoyed a good joke, remembered birthdays, and shared his love of nature and animals with those he held close to his heart. He had a special fondness throughout his life for his beloved dogs: Tippy, Penny, Thunder, Abigail, Fresh Lime, and Taj.
Karl loved his family first and foremost and he enjoyed every moment he shared with them whether looking at the stars above, the desert grasses, the vast Pacific Ocean, or holding their hand, large or small. Every moment with family was precious to him. Karl will be looked up to as a pillar of family unity, strength and love. He was a true friend . Karl will be dearly missed by many and remembered always.
Karl is survived by his wife Frances, sons Lacy Camp and Gregory Lee Greer, daughters Marcy Elizabeth Greer Saunders, Nancy Georganna Greer Hardee, and Frances Dodd Greer Nelson, brothers Frank, Erhard and Larry Stockl, sisters Joyce Wojcik and Janice Manis, 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 2 nephews, 5 nieces, 2 great-nephews, 4 great-nieces, on the Stockl side of the family and 82 Greer –Spurlock nieces and nephews. Karl also knew and enjoyed his great nieces and nephews. Family gatherings were enjoyed in the Holbrook home where the children would perform and sing together.
Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, December 11, 2010, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Holbrook Stake Center, Holbrook, AZ.
The viewing will be held 1 hour prior to services. A graveside service will be 11am Monday, December 13, 2010 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Avondale, AZ.
