The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ December 14, 2010 Claudia Golsarry Maestas, 60, of Holbrook went home with her Savior Sunday, Dec. 4, 2010. She was born May 4, 1950, in Flagstaff, the daughter of James Golsarry and Betty Jean Cheshire Golsarry. The family from Flagstaff to Winslow when Claudia was 5, and to Holbrook shortly thereafter. Claudia was a 1968 graduate of Holbrook High School, where she was the All American girl. She also attended Northern Arizona University. She was an avid sports fan, an accomplished athlete and a fierce competitor in many arenas, including the international business world. She loved the outdoors, and enjoyed skiing, hunting, boating, camping, baseball and golf. Claudia and her husband Leo worked hard to become world renown Indian traders (Native American Indian Traders). Claudia was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, friend and wife. She was an egalitarian and met no one in who she could not find value. She was a staunch defender and supporter of youth and oppressed people. Those who knew her well fondly recall one of her favority says,”Things are so easy if you just do the right thing.” She served on the Holbrook School District Governing Board for 12 years, on the Holbrook City Council, including terms as vice mayor and mayor, and on many state boards. She served as chairman of the Navajo County Democratic Committee and vice chairman of the Arizona Democratic Party, and was inducted into the Arizona Democratic Party Hall of Fame. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Leo Maestas; her children: Shawn and Donnette Maestas of Holbrook, Perii and Anthony Calles of Chander and Marlo Maestas of Holbrook; her stepson Sean Tanner and his wife Myra and their daughter Bailey; grandchildren: Kameron Edwards, Blake Maestas, Tucker Maestas and Cade Maestas, all of Holbrook, and Louis Calles, Marena Calles and Demitri Calles, all of Chandler; one great-granddaughter, and her siblings, Barbara Golsarry Barcoletti of Scottsdale, Richard Golsarry of Holbrook, Clifton Golsarry of Cottonwood and Catherine Golsarry of Queen Creek. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Darrell Golsarry. Rosary was held Dec. 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Holbrook. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 11, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Catholic Charities in Holbrook or Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
