STOCKHAUS, Fred Carl


Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Tuesday, December 14, 2010 Fred Carl Stockhaus, 89, formerly of Flagstaff, died peacefully on Nov. 30, 2010, in Surprise, with his wife of 66 years at his side. He was born April 5, 1921, in Hammond, Ind. Mr. Stockhaus was active in athletics most of his life. At Washington High School in East Chicago, Ind., he played football and baseball. At the University of Arizona, where he graduated with bachelor and masters degrees, he played football and lettered four years in baseball under the famed "Pop" McKale. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was on Iwo Jima when combat ceased. A baseball team was formed while the servicemen awaited transport home. Mr. Stockhaus was the pitcher for the Iwo team that flew to neighboring islands such as Guam and Saipan. He coached and taught in Superior and Flagstaff. For 25 years, he refereed football, basketball and baseball in northern Arizona. For four years, he served as AIA Region 1 Commissioner. As an avid baseball fan, to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976, Mr. Stockhaus took in a baseball game in every major league baseball park in the United States and Canada. He was thrilled and honored to be named a Legend in the East Chicago Hall of Fame and to be inducted into the Superior Hall of Fame. Mr. Stockhaus is survived by his wife June; son Dan (Diane); one grandson; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his son, William and his brother, Richard Stockhouse. Inurnment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, people lend a helping hand to someone in need, as Mr. Stockhaus always did.
