A memorial service was held Tuesday at Granite Mountain Junior High School in Prescott for Shelby Ann Hansen, 14, who died July 31 of injuries suffered in a traffic accident in Prescott.
Miss Hansen was an honor student at Granite Mountain and runner-up for the 1986 Yavapai County Kiwanis Award for Outstanding Citizenship.
She was a Prescott native who was the 1986 Rodeo Junior Queen, and would have been a member of the junior court for the 1988 Prescott Frontier Days 100th Rodeo.
She was prominent in high school rodeo, competing for Prescott High School in barrels, pole bending, goat tying and breakaway roping. She was honored in special ceremonies at the National High School Finals in Pueblo, Colo., this weekend by Arizona’s 34-member national championship team.
She was active in numerous riding clubs and 4-H in Prescott and in 1986 won the Junior Arizona Horse Judging and Reasons, the Arizona State Junior Reining, and the Yavapai County, Junior All-around Horsewoman awards. In 1987, she was named the Yavapai County Senior All-around Horsewoman.
Miss Hansen, the treasurer of the West Yavapai Teen Council, was a youth counselor in the Teens Say No to Substance Abuse Program.
Survivors include her parents, Dave and Pat Hansen of Prescott; two aunts, Susan Paris and Margie Brinkely, both of Congress; a brother, Pete Hansen; maternal grandparents Louis and Bernice Markle of Congress and paternal grandmother Elinor Pearson McAlister of Congress, and several other aunts, uncle and cousins.
