Scott was born Sept. 15, 1958 to Ben F. Matthews and Dorothy Kennedy Matthews in Blythe, Calif. Scott started first grade in Salome and attended through the eighth grade. He then attended high school in Salome and graduated in 1976. After graduation Scott helped his dad on the family farm, where he learned to irrigate, and drive the tractors and large equipment used. His first love was riding motorcycles, and later just being able to drive fast. In 1978, Scott went to Hawaii, where his sister Susie and her husband were living. While there, he got into the charcoal business. He would cut hardwood and put it into ovens to make the charcoal. While in Hawaii, he lived on the islands of Molokai and Oahu. Both he and Terry took great pride in their nursery and loved the hours they spent together in making their nursery a success. One of Scott’s first loves was his hunting and fishing. He was an avid fisherman, and he specialized in trout fishing and became one of the best. He was also a great Dutch oven cook, which he learned from his father, watching and helping him over many a campfire while on camping trips throughout his life.
