ASHCROFT, Lloyd


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 31, 2008 Lloyd Ashcroft, 84, of Safford died at his home March 22, 2008. He entered this life Dec. 3, 1923, in Delta, Utah. Lloyd was the last of his father Josiah E. Ashcroft's 21 children and his mother Arrilla Hamblin Ashcroft's sixth child. When he was three years old, his widowed mother moved her family to Eagar. Lloyd grew up in Eagar and graduated from Round Valley High School in 1941. He went to Utah State for a semester prior to being drafted. He served for three years during WWII achieving the rank of sergeant major. Within one month of being discharged from the Army, Lloyd was called to serve a mission in Western Canada. At the close of his mission, he met his lovely wife Alice Thomson. They were married for time and eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple July 29, 1948. They settled in Pendleton, Ore., then Eagar and back to Pendleton. In 1972 Lloyd and Alice returned to Eagar. While there, he became active in politics serving as councilman and mayor. Upon retirement Lloyd and Alice enjoyed traveling the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. They settled in Brownsville, Texas, for a few years before returning to Arizona. This time they chose the warmer climate of Safford. Lloyd and Alice chose Eagar as their final earthly resting place. Lloyd is survived by his four children, 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and brother D. Joy Ashcroft. Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, in the Eagar LDS Stake Center with interment to follow in the Eagar Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel of Safford.
